Mindale rises about 40 metres above the Chileka Plain. It is about 1000 m long by 450 m wide and tapers both to the north and south forming a near ellipse shape. The hill is covered by a layer of float which is composed mainly of magnetite boulders and gneiss. The float is thin over most of the hill but is some places it is reaches close to 2 m thick.
Location and Access
Mindale Hill lies about 22 kilometres north of Blantyre City and it is approximately 7 kilometres from the nearest railway station at Lirangwe. It is approximately 3 kilometres from the nearest point on the railway line.
The area is served by a good network of secondary roads that radiate from the Blantyre- Lilongwe tarred road. These roads link estates and trading centres and they are passable even during the rainy season. There is a railway line close to the area and this reaches to the ports of Nacala and Beira in Mozambique.
