The Mphwamphwa project lies in the northern region of Malawi near Livingstonia within Rumphi district.  This area is situated within one of the major coal mining areas that yields high calorific value coal.

The area can be reached by a tarred road which runs from Mzuzu to Karonga.  There is a secondary road from Mphwezi that joins the Livingstonia-Rumphi road 4 km north of Nchenachena.
