Britannia Mining has operations in Europe and Southern Africa. Our corporate head office is based in Mayfair, London, UK and a program office is located in Malawi. It is from Lilongwe that our experienced team conduct the technical geological activities that deliver on the company's exploration plan.
Our subsidiary, Britannia Malawi is a mineral exploration company with significant interests in Malawi, southern Africa.
The Company holds a portfolio of extensive mineral rights and is committed to progressing projects that meet the company’s vision to become the premier coal and iron ore miner in Malawi.
To date, Britannia Malawi has carefully acquired a portfolio of projects that cover a combined area in excess of 900 km². During Q3, the company completed initial geological studies over one iron ore and two coal targets; Mindale, Mphwamphwa and Ngana.
Our mission is to define high-grade JORC compliant bulk tonnage coal and iron ore resources to develop into profitable mining operations that satisfy local and international demand. Our immediate focus is to aggressively explore, discover and define resources on two of the company’s existing tenements at Mindale and Mphwamphwa. Furthermore, the company is exploring new projects within the highly prospective northern coal region near Karonga.
The company’s flagship project Mindale Iron Ore is located in the south of the country near Blantyre and covers a vast area of 650km². Transport links to this area are excellent, comprising of road and rail links to a number of ports in Mozambique. A study commissioned by Britannia Malawi during Q3 - undertaken by senior geologist John Nkhoma, found the regional geophysical and magnetic signature at Mindale extremely encouraging. Furthermore, empirical evidence detailing historical sampling during the 1960’s confirmed Mindale to bear a high-grade ore in excess 64% Fe.
In Q4 2009, Britannia Mining approved capex to commence geophysical, geomapping, trenching and pitting work at Mindale. The board has also approved an extensive drilling program that is due to commence in 2010.
